Police arrest one suspect as Ondo State traditional ruler escapes abduction

The traditional ruler in Akure north local Government Area of Ondo State, the Iresi of Osi, Oba David Olajide on Tuesday afternoon escaped from suspected Fulani herdsmen who attempted to kidnap him along Akure-Owo highway near Akure Airport, enroute his community. Osi community is less than two kilometres to Akure airport and the same tactics used to abduct a mother and her step-son on Sunday’s evening by suspected Kidnappers.   The Ondo State Police Command on Tuesday however arrested a Fulani herdsman, who was allegedly among a team of kidnappers that attempted to abduct the monarch of Osi town. However, it was learnt that the alleged attempt to abduct the monarch was unsuccessful as Oba Olajide was said to have escaped from the scene by confronting the abductors. The monarch explained that some kidnap victims (Mrs Olawumi and her stepson) were released on Tuesday  morning and he took them to the police headquarters in Akure.  On his way back to the Osi community, the kidnappers attacked him but he escaped.Oba Olajide said, “after the release of the woman, I took her and her son to the police headquarters to hand them over to the police, so on my way coming back home, the herdsmen blocked the road with their cows, the same way they kidnapped the woman and her son on Sunday when they were returning from church. As I got to the place, I slowed down my car and I saw them coming to attack me but I managed to escape, they hit and damaged my car but through the grace of God I escaped.” Oba Olajide further stated that the one of the suspected Fulani herdsmen was later arrested shortly after the attack, saying the suspect had been handed over to the police. Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Joseph, said the suspect was in the police custody for investigation. The PPRO said, “we have the suspect with us, we are already making efforts to arrest the fleeing members of the gang and investigation has also commenced.”The post Police arrest one suspect as Ondo State traditional ruler escapes abduction appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle off to Africa to continue Princess Diana's work

Now that baby Archie is here, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly planning a trip to Africa to help continue Harry's late mother, Princess Diana’s legacy. As part of their Autumn tour, Harry will travel to Angola where Diana visited in January 1997, just months before her death.  According to Daily Mirror, Palace aides are investigating Angola’s security situation to see if Meghan Markle and newborn son Archie will be able to join Harry in Angola as he fulfils his mother's legacy by continuing the important work by the HALO Trust.  However, they are expected to travel together for at least some of the African tour, which will also take them to Malawi to expand the reach of his charity Sentebale, possibly also South Africa and Botswana. In 2017 on International Mine Awareness Day, Harry said his mother’s work on banning landmines in the last months of her life "wasn’t universally popular".  He added: "Some believed she had stepped over the line into the arena of political campaigning – but for her this wasn’t about politics; it was about people." Harry continued: "She knew she had a big spotlight to shine, and she used it to bring attention on the people that others had forgotten, ignored or were too afraid to support." Advisors of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are working on a tailored role for the couple with the help of Sir David Manning, a former ambassador to the US, and Lord Geidt, the Queen’s former private secretary who chairs the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust. Harry’s first step will be next Monday to attend a Chatham House Africa Programme event on ‘Mine Clearance, Conservation, and Economic Development in Angola’, Buckingham Palace confirmed today. The event is being held in partnership with the HALO Trust, with the Angolan Government about to provide £44 million of funding to clear landmines in two national parks, a major opportunity for the conservation of southern Africa’s last great wilderness. The Africa Programme event will highlight the connection between conservation, economic development, and mine clearance, with a call to action for increased funding for mine clearance efforts in Angola, Daily Mirror reports. The post Prince Harry and Meghan Markle off to Africa to continue Princess Diana's work appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Alabama governor signs new bill requiring child sex offenders to undergo chemical castration

Governor of Alabama Kay Ivey has signed a bill into law on Monday night that would require the chemical castration of certain sex offenders as a condition of parole. The bill, passed by the state legislature last week, requires male offenders whose offense involved a child under the 13 to “undergo chemical castration treatment in addition to any other penalty or condition prescribed by law.” The law would require the sex offenders to foot the bill for the treatment but would “prohibit a person from being denied parole because of indigency.” State Rep. Steve Hurst (R), who sponsored the bill and had backed similar measures for over a decade, reportedly said, “Not only did I want it to pass, I want to follow it on through to the future where we can try to improve it. One of the ultimate goals that I want to do is for us to track it and to make sure what medication works for what individuals.” Other states, including Florida and California, have passed similar laws, but American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama Executive Director Randall Marshall told AL.com that the option has rarely been used and that it likely violates the Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. “It’s not clear that this actually has any effect and whether it’s even medically proven,” Marshall said. “When the state starts experimenting on people, I think it runs afoul of the Constitution.” State Sen. Cam Ward (R), the bill’s state Senate sponsor, said the law was unlikely to be frequently applied, as most people convicted of sex offenses against children will not be up for parole. The post Alabama governor signs new bill requiring child sex offenders to undergo chemical castration appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
