Europe’s Top 5 Leagues: Players with most Man of the Match awards listed

The total number of Man of the Match awards across Europe’s top five leagues this season have been added up – and one player has more than double the total of anyone else.

With the Premier League and Serie A wrapping up soon, the top tiers in Spain, Germany, England, Italy and France will all be completed. A perfect time to compare the best individual one-off displays and GiveMeSport have crunched the numbers to give us the top 25.

Kevin De Bruyne is uncatchable in the Premier League standings with nine Man of the Match awards in 2019/20. Sadio Mane and Marcus Rashford boast seven each, but that won’t help them take top spot with only one game to go.

Yet there are six players in double figures when it comes to Europe’s MotM gongs. Chelsea new boy Timo Werner leads the way in Germany with 10, perhaps surprisingly three clear of Robert Lewandowki’s seven.

Slightly odd, as Lewandowki was the clear choice for Bundesliga Player of the Year – with many arguing that the cancellation of the 2020 Ballon d’Or has robbed the Bayern Munich striker of his best chance of winning the prize.

In Italy, Cristiano Ronaldo reigns supreme with 10 – just reward for his 30 goals that have taken Juventus to the brink of a ninth consecutive Serie A crown.

But CR7 will want to smash every one of those MotM awards on the ground (possibly) when he hears who’s beaten him to top spot with a whopping total of 22.

Yes, it’s Lionel Messi. Barcelona have underwhelmed this season but Leo has still reigned supreme, finishing La Liga as top scorer, breaking the record for the highest number of assists in a single season and generally doing his best to single-handedly drag Barca over the line in so many games.

It probably doesn’t offer much consolation as Messi reflects on how Barcelona crumbled domestically after the restart – but it’s clear the 33-year-old is still dominating games, even if his club no longer are.
